About the Host


History of Kaduna City

Kaduna state is located at the northern part of Nigeria’s high plains. The vegetation cover is Sudan savannah characterized by scattered short trees, shrubs and grasses. The word ‘Kaduna’ is said to come as a result of a narrative linked to the Hausa word for crocodile (kada) in the river Kaduna, this is contested by the Gbagyi people known to have lived in the area for centuries. That the word ‘Kaduna’ is said to be Gbagyi word for a river. But the name Kaduna was taken up by Lord Fredrick Lugard and his colonial colleagues when they moved the capital of the then northern region from Zingeru to Kaduna.

Kaduna state was founded by the British in 1913 and became the capital of Nigeria’s former northern region hich was made up of Zaria and Katsina in 1917, and it retained this status until 1967 when it became the capital of the north central state which was later renamed Kaduna state in 1976.

Kaduna state is divided into 23 local government areas They are: Birnin Gwari, Chikun, Giwa, Igabi, Ikara, Jaba, Jema’a, Kachia, Kaduna North, Kaduna South, Kagarko, Kajuru, Kaura, Kauru, Kubau, Kudan, Lere, Makarfi, sabon Gari, Sanga, Soba Zangon Kataf and Zaria.

Demographics

The state is politically classified as belonging to the northwestern part of the country with about 6.1million people (2006 estimate). Kaduna State is a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic state populated by over 60 different ethnic groups with Hausa/Fulani and Gbagyi as the dominant ethnic groups.

Resources

Kaduna state is blessed with minerals which include clay, serpentine, asbestos, amethyst, kyannite, gold, graphite and siltimanite graphite, which is found in Sabon Birnin Gwari, in the Birnin Gwari local government. This is an important raw material used in the manufacture of pencils, crucibles, electrodes, generator brushes and other sundry parts.
